Michigan State and Michigan typically play highly-contested games in this Big Ten rivalry. However, that likely won’t be the case this season, as Michigan is undefeated and Michigan State is struggling through a difficult year. This game will be played in front of a sold-out stadium full of Wolverines fans hoping to avenge last season’s defeat.

Our expert has early odds and a best bet for this matchup, so let’s get into it.

Michigan State Football vs. Michigan Football prediction

The Wolverines are fresh off a bye week and are looking for revenge for their loss to Michigan State last season. That Spartans victory involved a bit of luck, as they got a number of explosive runs from Kenneth Walker, who is now in the NFL. Historically, that type of game favored Michigan State with how the Spartans got most of their offense on the ground.

Things should be different this season, especially with how Michigan is playing on both sides of the ball. With the series now shifting to Ann Arbor, the outlook looks bleak for the Spartans.

Michigan State Football vs. Michigan Football free best bet: Michigan -21.5 (-110)

Michigan is arguably a better team than it was a season ago. The same cannot be said of Michigan State on both sides of the ball. The Spartans don’t run the ball nearly as well as they did last year and QB Payton Thorne looks lost without Walker. Furthermore, their defense is banged up, which should hurt them against this Michigan offensive line.

Michigan has one of the best offenses in the nation by expected points added (EPA) per play and the Wolverines are also second in the country in EPA per play on defense. The Spartans are 109th in the nation in EPA margin, which explains a few of their blowout losses in September.

Michigan’s dominant run defense should have no trouble against Michigan State’s 125th ranked rushing attack either. Wolverines QB J.J. McCarthy should settle in and have success against the Spartans pass defense that is ranked outside the top 100 in the nation. Look for the Wolverines to take an early lead and roll to a convincing victory.
