This is the horror crash scene where a 14-year-old schoolgirl was killed and her friend injured after they were ploughed into by a car which had veered off the road - as police arrest a man for drink driving.

The harrowing photos show the Vauxhall Astra on its side after it had mounted onto a grass verge at the junction of Braunstone Lane and Mortimer Way, in Leicester, shortly after 11am on Wednesday.

A 37-year-old man has since been detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and of driving with an alcohol level above the legal limit.

He will remain in custody while police quiz him over the crash which police say several witnesses saw as they urge them to come forward.

Leicestershire Police confirmed that a black Vauxhall Astra had left the road and collided with the two teenagers.

'From enquiries carried out so far, we know there were a number of people in the area at the time. I'd ask anyone living in Braunstone Lane with CCTV or doorbell cameras at their address to get in touch.

'Likewise, I'm still keen to speak to anyone who saw the Astra prior to the collision occurring and any motorists with dashcams who have not yet spoken to police. Any information or footage you have, no matter how insignificant you think it is, could help.'
