Champions League: Yannick Carrasco antagonised by opponent after Atletico penalty miss

Bayer Leverkusen’s Mitchel Bakker rubbed salt in Yannick Carrasco’s wounds after the Atlético Madrid star missed a late penalty in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

In one of the most dramatic finishes to a game we’ll see this season, Atletico crashed out of Europe’s premier club competition when Lukas Hradecky saved Carrasco’s late spot-kick.

Atleti were awarded a penalty – and a chance to keep their Champions League hopes alive – after the final whistle following a VAR review.

The match resumed and all the pressure was on Carrasco’s shoulders.

Score and Atletico could still advance to the Champions League knockout stages. Miss and the Spanish side would be eliminated.

Carrasco, who scored Atletico’s first equaliser of the night midway through the first half, produced a poor penalty which Hradecky saved.

The ball then rebounded to Saul Niguez, who hit the crossbar with a header.

Reinildo had one final opportunity to win the game for Atletico but his follow-up shot was blocked.

Atletico’s players couldn’t believe they hadn’t scored. All of them were crestfallen as referee Clement Turpin blew the full-time whistle - for the second time.

The Dutch defender, for one reason or another, celebrated wildly in Carrasco’s face.

Le truc le plus paranormal dans le match de l’Atletico hier c’est que Carrasco se soit pas battu avec bakker hein pic.twitter.com/swbKTM8aHh — Batsko la mêlo (@buuuutttt) October 27, 2022

It brings back memories of the infamous Martin Keown incident when Manchester United’s Ruud van Nistelrooy missed a last-minute penalty against Arsenal in 2003.

Proper s**thousery.

What did Diego Simeone say after the match?

“It summarises a little what our play was until today in this competition,” Atletico boss Diego Simeone told reporters, per Football Espana. “Everything has been a significant struggle, in many of the games where we did not gain points, we could have scored a few more goals if we were more effective. The final images,  with the missed penalty, the shot against the crossbar and the shot against Carrasco, sum it up.

“It is clear that we are not looking for excuses, we did not do [many] things. In this match there was a second half of the highest level, good play, scoring situations, counterattacks well stopped by [Jan] Oblak, the team gave everything at all times. It annoys you not being able to go to Porto with the possibility of continuing.”
